TAROT BLOG HOP: What's In A Name? Some Tips and Tricks Using Names With the Tarot

Happy Lammas / Lughnassad!

The study of names is called onomastics, a field which touches on linguistics, history, anthropology, psychology, sociology, philology, genealogy, ethnicity and much more. When people refer to the "meaning of a name," they are most likely referring to the etymology, which is the original literal meaning.
A name is important as it is one's identity. It is the essence of a person. A link to one's culture, family, ancestors and the part of the world they come from. Many times, it is the first thing we get to know about a person who has entered into our sphere of influence. Names are central in defining identity.

What is the very first thing we ask our clients? "What's your name?" And if we are really good at what we do we don't forget their name and during the consultation we will use their name by addressing them or asking them questions a few times. This has a magickal affect on the person getting the reading. It makes them feel important, focused on, nurtured...and that is why they have come to see you for the reading to begin with.

When it comes to naming our business or project or finding a domain name for our website, there is much careful thought put into naming it. Just like with political memes, slogans and advertising campaigns--names and groupings of words have power and influence. One also wants to find out if the name selected or conceptualized is being used by anyone else in any form before naming a business or venture. And if the name truly expresses what one is doing with their project--action words make sense.

Practicing the craft is the same--putting together a magickal working is based on the words backing up one's INTENTION. Many times magickal workings or spells have groupings of words or a poem that helps to direct the energy and mentally solidify the intent of the working. Selecting the right words really counts or one's spell could backfire or have a different outcome than what was originally intended. It is so important to realize that once we put words out into the universe, we are "beckoning" that energy. Good to keep the words aligned with peace, love and positivity. Names are the same.

Playing around with some of the online resources to find out the meanings of names and where they come from, both given first names and surnames can take a lot of time and end up being very revealing about people and their families. And it has been proven many times, that the simpler, the most easy to pronounce and the least complicated name can help to make a person more successful with their career and/or in public life. Hence, stage names for those people that automatically make them cultural influencers for the rest of us--a perfect example.

Adding Numerology to your readings creates another layer and more depth with personality typing and forecasts on what is coming up. It can also indicate how this person moves through the world, how they tackle obstacles or how they mingle with others. You can use a client's first name, given name or the whole name (i.e., how they would sign a legal document). Many other online resources want the given name at birth. It is important to find your very own niche and do what feels comfortable for you.

One of the best online sources I have found for Numerology is the following site and this particular article I linked below broke down the letters of one's first name to give a unique personality type:

“Words are things. You must be careful, careful about calling people out of their names, using racial pejoratives and sexual pejoratives and all that ignorance. Don’t do that. Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally in to you.” ― Maya Angelou. “Names have power.” ― Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief. “What's in a name? that which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet.” ― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. “Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. "When you are born, you are given an identity through your name. A name helps differentiate you from others. While every culture’s naming methods differ significantly, the impact of a name on identity is intercultural." --Kris Wolfe.
